HERITAGE

The Stranaska Metrology Laboratory is the core analytical data-driven measurement science program of Stranaska Scientific LLC which was founded 30 years ago in Gaithersburg, Maryland USA by Dr. Jerry D. Messman. During his second tenure at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), this country’s National Metrology Institute (NMI), Jerry was responsible for rejuvenation of the high-accuracy analytical chemistry spectrophotometric standards program in the Chemical Sciences and Technology Laboratory. While in this position, and under the mentorship of Dr. Radu Mavrodineanu, Jerry directed the certification of hundreds of transmittance SRMs (including the SRM 930 series, the SRM 1930 series and the SRM 2031 series), a new lot of the consumable SRM 931 series absorbance standard, and a new lot of the SRM 2034 series wavelength standard. During this same time period, Dr. Messman also began his life-long journey on developing short courses, tutorials and workshops on analytical UV/VIS spectrophotometer calibration science for the dissemination of his NIST knowledge to calibration and metrology technicians in FDA-regulated laboratories and related industries.

Although Dr. Messman is now officially retired from Stranaska Metrology Laboratory, the company’s original analytical measurement science program, he remains involved with the Laboratory only on a limited basis, primarily in an advisory capacity. Now as Analytical Scientist Emeritus, Jerry serves full-time as Senior Managing Director of Stranaska Scientific LLC. In addition, Jerry focuses his time and energy in a new challenging senior executive leadership role which involves strategizing and establishing the fundamental groundwork as the cornerstone to the Stranaska Metrology Academy, the company’s premier analytical scientific hybrid program. The broad scope of the Academy includes state-of-the-art project focus areas and outreach in analytical metrology that emphasize advancements in Stranaska research and development, communications, training and education. The eventual elevation of the status of the Academy relative to that of the long-standing Laboratory is a predictable and logical process in realization of the overall goal for unequivocal Stranaska leadership, growth and achievement in analytical metrology.
