The Stranaska Metrology Laboratory is the core analytical data-driven spectrophotometric measurement calibration program of Stranaska Scientific LLC which was founded 30 years ago by Dr. Jerry D. Messman in Gaithersburg, Maryland USA. During his second tenure at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), this country’s National Metrology Institute (NMI), Jerry embraced a career-changing opportunity and challenging responsibility to rejuvenate the prestigious high-accuracy analytical chemistry spectrophotometric standards program in the Chemical Sciences and Technology Laboratory. While in this new position, and under the mentorship of Dr. Radu Mavrodineanu, Jerry directed the certification of hundreds of transmittance SRMs (including the SRM 930 series, the SRM 1930 series and the SRM 2031 series), a new lot of the consumable SRM 931 series absorbance standard, and a new lot of the SRM 2034 series wavelength standard. During this same time period, Dr. Messman also began his life-long journey on developing and presenting tutorials, short courses and workshops on analytical UV/VIS spectrophotometer calibration science for the dissemination of his NIST knowledge to calibration and metrology technicians in FDA-regulated laboratories and related industries.
Today, more than 30 years later, Dr. Messman continues to serve as Senior Managing Director of Stranaska Scientific LLC. Although now retired from the Stranaska Metrology Laboratory, Jerry has transferred his full time and energy to serving as Senior Executive Director of the Stranaska Metrology Academy, a synergistic landmark program that Dr. Messman had envisioned as a scientific reality throughout his career. Academy hybrid focus areas, aligned with the CREAM moniker (Communications, Research and Education in Analytical Metrology), are centralized as an internal means to accentuate comprehensive Stranaska objectives and scientific competence for continued global growth and leadership in analytical metrology.
The broad CREAM scope of the Academy includes state-of-the-art project focus areas and outreach in analytical metrology that emphasize advancements in Stranaska research and development, communications, training and education. Of special note, Stranaska Press serves as a communications registry for the Stranaska Metrology Academy that includes a respository of the company’s calibration science databases, educational releases, and SJARMA, the Stranaska Journal of Analytical Research and Measurement Analytics. Elevation of the Academy status relative to that of the long-standing Laboratory is the predictable and logical process led by Dr. Messman in eventual realization of his overall goal for unequivocal Stranaska leadership, growth and achievement in analytical metrology.
