HERITAGE

The early beginnings of the Stranaska Metrology Laboratory (SML) date back to more than 30 years ago when a visionary commercial entity was founded by Dr. Jerry Messman immediately following his tenure with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Maryland USA . During his preceding time at NIST, Jerry embraced a challenging responsibility and career-changing opportunity in analytical chemistry to rejuvenate a prestigious high-accuracy spectrophotometric standards program in the Chemical Sciences and Technology Laboratory as it was known at that time.

Dr. Messman directed the NIST certification of hundreds of transmittance SRMs (including the SRM 930 series, the SRM 1930 series and the SRM 2031 series), a new lot of the consumable SRM 931 series absorbance standard, and a new lot of the SRM 2034 series wavelength standard. Concurrently, Jerry began his life-long journey on developing and presenting tutorials, short courses and workshops on analytical UV/VIS spectrophotometer calibration science as a productive means to disseminate his NIST knowledge to calibration and metrology technicians in FDA-regulated laboratories and related industries.

Although recently retired from the Stranaska Metrology Laboratory, Dr. Messman continues to serve as Senior Managing Director of Stranaska Scientific LLC. Additionally, Jerry now devotes his time and energy to serving as Academy Executive Director of the Stranaska Metrology Academy (SMA), a synergistic company program with landmark scientific initiatives that Dr. Messman has envisioned throughout his career.
